To boost participation from partner schools, the CEF Racing Team School Challenge encouraged schools to help raise funds for tuition assistance while participating in one of the LA Marathon’s races. Our Lady of Talpa School in Boyle Heights and Damien High School in La Verne were this year’s winners of our challenge by raising the most funds centered around the races. Both schools had faculty and staff members run in the LA Marathon’s Half Marathon or 5K this past March, with their communities rallying around them with donations.
As a prize, Our Lady of Talpa received new gear to support its growing athletic program. The equipment selected included basketballs, a full set of pickleball equipment and jump ropes.
Timothy, a first grader, shared his excitement even though he is still learning how to use some of it.

“I don’t know how to jump rope, so I look forward to learning,” said Timothy.
Madeline, a fifth-grade student, was thrilled to see the outdated items replaced.

“Well, I think it’s pretty amazing. We had equipment, but it was a little old and we didn’t have enough. Now everyone has a chance to play,” said Madeline.
Sakai, an eighth grader, reflected on the difference this will make for current and future students.
“Usually we had only four or five basketballs and some kids even brought volleyballs from home. I think it’s really good for Our Lady of Talpa and for future students here to enjoy,” said Sakai.
Principal Diana Hanger described how the school rallied behind the challenge, supporting four team members in the 5K.
“We had nearly our entire campus involved in the fundraising effort and we really hyped up the students. They were part of the process,” said Principal Hanger. “We shared our goal and raised a lot through activities like free dress donations, St. Patrick’s Day candy grams and snack sales.”
“Thank you so much, CEF, for all of your support and for being a champion for our students. We truly appreciate it,” added Principal Hanger.
Damien High School will use its award to enhance its athletic department. The all-boys school offers 15 sports programs that provide a wide range of opportunities for student athletes.
The Racing Team School Challenge is one of many ways CEF brings school communities together, celebrates student involvement, and promotes tuition assistance. Congratulations to Our Lady of Talpa and Damien High School! |
